✍️ Editor’s Note: The "Ladder" Paradox
I’m writing this while staring at a stack of smart home sensors I promised myself I’d install three weeks ago. You know how it is. The busy work moves faster than the desire to climb a ladder on a Saturday morning. It’s the great paradox of our time: we buy tech to save time, only to realize that maintaining our time-savers has become a part-time job.
If your smart house has been feeling a little dumb lately (maybe a door sensor that’s been offline since Thanksgiving or a soundbar that doesn't quite hit since you moved the recliner) this is the weekend to fix it. I’ve realized that the best tech-life balance isn't about unplugging entirely. It’s about making sure the tech we do use actually serves us.
That’s why I’m particularly obsessed with the Nex Playground right now. We spent the last decade perfecting the lean back experience (streaming 80+ shows on the couch) but we’re finally entering an era of lean forward tech. Whether it’s camera-based gaming that actually tracks your kids’ movement or AI tools like Google Genie that let you build worlds instead of just consuming them, the friction is disappearing.
This week also marks a weirdly poetic milestone in tech history. Today would have been Doug Engelbart’s birthday. He’s the guy who gave us the wooden mouse. Looking at a block of wood with a tail next to the humanoid robots Figure AI is deploying into hospitals this week is a trip. We’ve gone from carving tools out of timber to teaching silicon how to walk the halls of a clinic.
So, here is the plan: do the boring stuff first. Run your sensor sweep, calibrate your center channel, and get the maintenance out of the way. Then, reward yourself with a deep dive into the Stream List (scroll down). I'll be the one on the couch finally catching the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
See you on the grid,
